Two different plots within this famous Grand Cru site, located mid-slope on the southern side of the vineyard. At the center of the slope, the soil is shallow, a depth of about 45 cm. (17 inches) with a greater proportion of clay than is found higher up on the slope, overlying broken limestone. These very old vines, 80 years in age, are situated in the midst of the prestigious Clos de la Bourgogne that was built by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux and dates back to 1098.

Olivier Bernstein, a winemaker with a unique path, entered Burgundy’s winemaking world through choice rather than family tradition. His family’s background was in classical music, and his entrepreneurial spirit led him to follow his passion for wine. After studying viticulture, he acquired vineyards in Roussillon, then moved to Burgundy in 2007. He met his cellar master, Richard Seguin, in Gevrey-Chambertin. With a focus on old vines, Bernstein’s meticulous process spans about 30 months, allowing for no compromises. He acquired vines in prestigious locations, including Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru and Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. Today, Bernstein’s vineyards hold old vines, crucial for his acclaimed wines.
